Dads with depression

Here is a fantastic recording from radio national about dad's With Depression. Real discussion about how fam ily and work both can become  places that are not helpful for dads with depression. The guests on this show are John Clark a father of three, and Richard Flethcer from the fathers and research program at Newcastle University.

You will here John talk a bout how HE was blamed for being quiet, angry, removed when really he had depression! Not his fault. This is a great recording. John figured out how to talk to his wife and children about his depression.

Men's Forum

Watch this space:

On Wednesday June 20th there will be a forum on Men's Health. This forum 'The Next Step' - A New Focus on Men' will inform people of the recent happenings on the Southern Fleurieu that support men to maintain healthy connected lives.
This is a follow up forum from the first Men's Health and Wellbeing Forum held in June 2011.

In addition  - at this forum you will have a chance to be one of the original members of the soon to be incorporate group M.E.N. ( Men's Engagement Network)

Testicular Self examination

Some GP from the UK recently came out and said that teaching men to do TSE (Testicular Self Examination) causes to much anxiety in men. In fact he called it Ball Watching Neurotics.
Well... Mark Frydenberg  professor of surgery and on the board of Andrology Australia de-bunks this.
The upshot is men...... check your testicles for unusual lumps.

Avoiding erectile dysfunction after Prostate Surgery

An article in the Science Daily on May 16 talks about a study that recommend that men undergoing robotic-assisted surgery for prostate cancer look for a doctor who has performed at least 1000 surgeries, who actively seeks to improve their skills to help ensure successful post -surgery recovery from erectile dysfunction. The authors of the research also found that new, refined techniques that ensure the gentle handling of the nerves around the prostate make a difference in improved erectile function.

If you want to read more of the article go here or if you want to talk about erectile dysfunction contact the Men's Health Worker at the Southern Fleurieu Health Service.

IDAHO

Homophobia is the cause of much distress in our community. Young men that are gay are 3 to 8 times more likely to attempt suicide than other young men. This is because our community does NOT SUPPORT THESE YOUNG MEN.
Whatever our views might be about same sex attraction it is my ethical and moral duty to help keep our son's , brothers, and friends from the horrible situation of depression and suicide.
IDAHO ( International Day Against Homophobia) is on May 17'th. I will be supporting this day and hope that others will too.
If you know anyone who would like to talk about their sexuality in a confidential and supportive space please refer them to me on 0422459660.

If I Were Ben

Know any young men who have recently found out that their girlfriend is pregnant?  What about a young guy who had no idea this could happen to him and is still at school.
If anyone would like to borrow a DVD that explores this issue I have one to lend.

Or.. How does a young man deal with his girlfriends decision to have a termination if he wants the child? Hard stuff to work through.

Support for Vets

There are quite a few support things happening for current and past armed services personnel in the Victor area.
