For all men that attend the Men's Get Togethers on Friday nights.
The current funds that have been providing for our food are GONE (cry cry). So ... as we have all been discussing over the past few months; we are now going to cover the costs ourselves --- meaning. Please bring $5 to each of the men's get together. (Of course if you can't bring this or forget - this doesn't mean you don't get fed.) Will talk more about this next Friday.
This is a place where men of the Southern Fleurieu can come for information, make comments and interact with others. Please feel free to come in look around. To make a comment. Click on the 'orange' comment button at the end of the post. Write your post in the box provided. A drop down box will appear saying comment as..'select profile'. For men in their 60s
Health in your sixties – (Thanks to Foundation 49 for this)
Are you still working, retired, volunteering in the community or planning to travel? Busy at home with grandchildren in your life? This is a decade of change for many men, when the routines of the past can disappear and you may have a bit more time to do your own thing. How you spend your time has as much to do with your health as any other influences. So keep moving at least 30 minutes a day with a walk, a game of golf, gardening, a hit of tennis – they’re all investments in your long-term mobility and energy levels. The range of opportunities open to you is far broader if you are in good health.
Take Action!
If you don’t already have one, find a GP you feel comfortable talking to Make an annual visit to your GP an essential goal each birthday.
Talk to your GP about:
Your family’s medical history Osteoporosis risk
Weight, height and waist measure An annual flu shot and other immunisations you may need
Blood pressure Screening for kidney disease
Cholesterol levels Screening for bowel cancer – every 2 years
Type 2 diabetes risk
Skin cancer risk
Prostate cancer risk – talk to your GP about what action is appropriate for you
Hearing and vision tests
With the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure increasing with age, it’s important to have your blood pressure and fasting blood cholesterol and fats measured regularly. If they are within normal limits, a re-check every two years will be enough to keep a watchful eye on things. If your test results are creeping up a little, your doctor will be able to help you make a few changes and tell you when to come back for a review.

Being Mindful
Mindfulness, the most scientifically investigated form of meditation, has been the subject of a huge growth of
interest in clinical and scientific circles in recent years. The evidence is suggesting that learning to pay
attention may be the most important skill we ever learn. Why? What are the health benefits of meditation?
How are modern scientific methods being used to investigate meditation and its benefits? These and other
questions will be explored in this introductory article.
The importance of paying attention is not a new concept as this quote from William James, the father of modern psychology, indicates we think we are happiest when ß Mind wandering to neutral topicsß Mind wandering to pleasant topicsß Mind not wandering from what one is currently doing. You might feel tempted to answer that we are happiest when the mind is wandering to pleasant topics. In fact, according to a study from Harvard University, people report being happiest while their mind is not wandering from what they are doing.
The authors of this study wrote, “In conclusion, a human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement
that comes at an emotional cost.”

No surprise re larger waists need to wee more often
I was a reading a recent article in the 'Science Daily' website. It says Men with large waists urinate more frequently than their slimmer counterparts, according to research in the August issue of the urology journal BJUI.
This is no surprise as we have been reminded of issues related to weight (larger waists) for sometime now. However this is a timely reminder that men with waists measuring 100cm plus reported up to three times more urinary problems than men with waists of 90cm or less.

They also found that larger waist measurements were associated with a greater prevalence of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and erection and ejaculation problems.
SO THE MESSAGE HERE IS GO HAVE A CHECK UP WITH YOUR GP - SOON
