M.E.N. constitution
Anyone who reads this blog is invited to a special meeting of the Men's Engagement Network (M.E.N.) to formalise and adopt a constitution.
The group M.E.N. grew out of
a community forum organised by the Southern Fleurieu Health Service in 2011.
The purpose of the forum was to identify what the service needs of Southern
Fleurieu men might be.
On the top of the list
identified at that meeting was the creation of
a specific men’s health worker for our local community.. This has
subsequently occurred. As an immediate offshoot of that position ; a steering
committee was formed to help guide the men’s health worker.
It is this steering committee
which has become known as M.E.N. The men’s engagement network is now ready for
its next step – adopting a constitution.
When: 7.00pm Friday November 2nd
Where: The Gospel Centre (across from Victor High School)
Hope to see you there.
Contact Bill Harris on 8552 3004 for further details

There are lots of things to watch out for and be part of in the month of November.
WHITE RIBBON DAY BREAKFAST: White Ribbon Day (November 25) is when men stand up and condemn all forms of violence against women. In Victor there are already several groups working on events for this important day. One of these will be a breakfast on the morning of FRIDAY November 23rd. This breakfast will be a chance to show your support of this day, a chance to pledge your opposition to violence against women, to buy a WRD bracelet or pin (proceeds go to the WRD campaign) and to hear the unacceptable statistics about violence against women in this otherwise great country. Please put this date in your diary and stay tuned for more details.

Suicide workshops at Victor
Thanks to the Victor Harbor times for this......
ENCOUNTER BAY - A suicide forum will be held at the Encounter Bay Football Club next month in a bid to raise awareness about it along the south coast.
Instigated by former Victor Harbor man Bryan Littlely and presented by Wesley Mission, the LifeForce Suicide Prevention program will help the public recognise if someone may be at risk of suicide and what appropriate actions may be taken to help.
Workshop participants will learn about the issues surrounding suicide and be equipped with the skills to identify and support people at risk. They will also learn how to access professional assistance and support.
The forum will encompass a two-hour Suicide Prevention Awareness Seminar on Monday, October 22, from 7pm to 9pm.
There will also be a one-day workshop on Suicide Prevention Training on Tuesday, October 23, from 9am to 4pm.
Bryan Littlely decided to organise the event in response to members of the local footballing community having taken their own lives.

How much should men weigh?
A series of short videos for men called 'Men's Health Pitch' have been created by the Tufts University School of Medicine, Department of Executive Health, Lahey Clinic, Burlington, MA, USA.
These cover a range of topics that are designed just to start getting men engaged around thinking about their health. The first of these is about weight.

Using gold in prostate cancer treatment
Believe it or not it looks like using gold nanoparticles to help treat prostate cancer may be on the cards.
Currently, large doses of chemotherapy are required when treating certain forms of cancer, resulting in toxic side effects. The chemicals enter the body and work to destroy or shrink the tumor, but also harm vital organs and drastically affect bodily functions. Now, scientists at the University of Missouri have demonstrated that a new form of prostate cancer treatment that uses radioactive gold nanoparticles, and was developed at MU, is safe to use in dogs.

Men creating artwork opportunity
Hello everyone,
If you or someone you know is keen to get involved in some community artwork have a look at the information below.
'Change And Adaptation is a program that forms partnerships between arts, health, environment and local government. It will explore how arts in community can enhance the delivery of the core business of these partners, and highlight new, sustainable and effective ways of doing business.
13 highly respected artists will work with a broad cross section of communities in the Murray Mallee, Coorong, Southern Fleurieu and South East.
Michael Tye is one of these artists and he is working with men in the Southern Fleurieu region to create an artwork exploring men's attitudes to their health. This artwork will be installed on the front of the Southern Fleurieu Health Service building during November.
To find out more, or to be a part of this project, please phone Michael Tye on 0438 800 066 .'

Engaging Men in Health Services
SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION PUT OUT BY ANDROLOGY AUSTRALIA ABOUT ENGAGING MEN IN HEALTH SERVICES.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? IS THIS CORRECT?
There is a myth that men don’t visit their doctor. However, most men 40+ years have visited a doctor in the last 12 months.
But compared to women, men visit the doctor less often, have shorter consultations and tend to see their GP later in the courseof their illness
•• A range of barriers appear to exist for men’s help seeking, particularly if the area is of a sensitive nature
•• Discussing sensitive issues such as mental health, sexual dysfunction or reproductive health is a shared responsibility between patient and doctor
•• It is important for GPs to maximise opportunities to engage men effectively
What influences men’s interaction with GPs
•• Men are often influenced by their partners and friends when
considering to seek help
•• Metaphors comparing men’s bodies to cars have been used in health promotion to enhance men’s understanding of preventable risk factors, although it may not appeal to all men
•• Displaying and disseminating health information in the local community may improve men’s health awareness and encourage men to visit their GP regularly
•• Creating more ‘male friendly’ environments by i) using men’s health displays ii) acknowledging the challenges men face in making and waiting for appointments iii) providing a broad range of services and ) providing evening appointments.
However, the effectiveness of ‘male friendly’ environments should be tested at a local clinic level
•• The perception of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety as weaknesses as opposed to illnesses can act as a barrier to seeking help. It’s important that GPs reinforce the message that depression and anxiety are illnesses that can be managed in most cases like any other illness
•• The gender of the GP does not matter, except when dealing with issues related to sexual or reproductive health where a male may be preferred by some men, particularly for older men
•• In older men and/or couples, barriers to sexual health help seeking include the GP’s personal attitudes towards sexuality, the perceived relationship with the GP and a preference for the GP to be the
same age

Movember - Join our team
Hi,
I’ve registered for Movember and pledged to grow a moustache for 30 days to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. This year, we honour the great men who have grown before us and, as Movember and Sons, pay respect to the simple truth “knowledge is power, moustache is king.”
As our forefathers always knew, the moustache is the mark of a man. Today, it is a man’s ribbon, a symbol to spark conversation and help change the face of men’s health.
You can take part either by growing one Dirty Son of a Mo as a Mo Bro, or join as a Mo Sista to help recruit others, share knowledge and support Mo growers.
To join my team of Movember Moustache Merchants go to https://www.movember.com/au/register/details/team_id/478493
If you'd like to find out more about the type of work you'd be helping to fund by supporting Movember, take a look at the Programs We Fund section on the Movember website: http://au.movember.com/about/funding-overview/

100
In the 3-minute video below we see 100 people, filmed by Jeroen Wolf, from ages one to one hundred. The one-year-old mostly just stares, the remainder look into the camera and state their age.
What I find interesting is the uneven way that people age. As you watch the clip, people’s ages become increasingly difficult to pin down. You know that each person is about one year older than the last, but their appearance betrays this knowledge. One might looksignificantly older than the one before, or quite a bit younger. How old we look doesn’t ascend nicely in a linear fashion, but varies tremendously. No doubt this is based, in part, on genetics and life choices, but it is also dependent on opportunities and expectations related to ascribed identities and social structures.
Paddle Group
I have been paddling my surfboard on occaision from Chicken Run to Basham's beach. I am now getting a Stand Up paddle Board to do the same thing. This is a great way to get fit and be out on the water. If you would like to do this with me on a regular basis give me call on 8552 9214. It would be nice to get a group of people to do this with. You might want to do it on a kayak or canoe or SUP or anything else that paddles. If you haven't got one of those things maybe we can organise it for you. Afterwards stopping for a coffee will be nice.
This map shows you where the paddle is from

Listed here are 2 articles that may help men understand the current thinking regarding testing and treatment of prostate cancer.
The first article ( CLICK HERE) discusses new genetic markers associated with prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction
The second article discusses new treatment ideas for men with low risk tumors. Funny enough the basically suggest 'watch, wait and monitor'. Anyway CLICK HERE to see more

Men's Health - Dairy Australia Gets Onboard
Recently I was asked to speak at an event organised by Dairy Australia. I was asked to speak about the issues that men face in terms of health. particularly about depression and keeping yourself healthy in times of stress. For those of you who don't know; dairy farming is going through some tough times at the moment - big changes.
The upshot is..... Good on Dairy Australia for supporting their men and being pro active about health and wellbeing.
